Three Tips for Teachers: Reducing Overwhelm and Finding Joy This School Year
As we gear up for another school year it’s time to start thinking about finding that sweet spot between teaching, learning, and taking care of ourselves.
Last year, I realized I needed to make a few changes to keep my sanity and joy intact.
Here are three things I’m committing to doing differently this year, and I thought you might find them helpful too!
Dialing Back on Overcommitting
Last year, I tried to do it all and ended up feeling stretched thin. Between school duties, extracurricular activities, and professional development, my calendar was always full. This year, I’m making a conscious decision to prioritize fewer projects that really matter to me and my students. Quality over quantity, right?
By focusing on what’s truly important, I’m hoping to not only reduce stress but also increase my effectiveness.
Here’s a tip: Before committing to a new project or activity, ask yourself if it aligns with your core goals for the year.
If it doesn’t, it’s okay to say no.
Simplifying My To-Do List
My to-do list was my Everest, and it often left me overwhelmed. From grading to planning lessons, the list never seemed to end. This time around, I’m streamlining. I want to spend more time on things that spark joy and less on the stuff that can wait or isn’t essential.
Here’s what I’m doing:
At the start of each week, I’m identifying my top three priorities and focusing on those. Breaking down tasks into smaller, manageable steps and celebrating small wins along the way helps too.
Remember, it’s about progress, not perfection.
Embrace the Journey
We’re all human, and we all have those moments when we feel like we’re not doing enough. This year, I’m going easy on myself. No more beating myself up for not getting everything done perfectly. I’m embracing the journey, imperfections and all.
One way I’m practicing self-compassion is by setting realistic expectations and allowing myself to take breaks. It’s crucial to recharge, so don’t forget to carve out time for yourself, whether it’s reading a book, taking a walk, or simply enjoying a quiet moment.
Let’s support each other in creating classrooms where balance and mindfulness thrive. Our students deserve teachers who are energized and passionate about what they do. Here’s to a fantastic school year ahead!
